Patrick A. Smith, MD
Dr. Smith is a Michigan native who earned his undergraduate degree graduating with honors from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He remained in Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Smith completed a surgical internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center as well as his orthopaedic residency. Upon finishing his residency, he was awarded the "Parke-Davis Research Award" at the University of Michigan. He then moved to Columbus, Georgia where he completed a one year sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Jack C. Hughston at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.
Dr. Smith joined Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986 and specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has served as the Head Team Physician for the University of Missouri athletic department since 1991; he recently received the "Sports Medicine Hall of Fame Award" by the Missouri Athletic Trainer's Association for outstanding service, dedication and contribution in the field of Sports Medicine (June 2010). He also treats high school and college athletes from across the region. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and most recently (2010), Dr. Smith was appointed Director of the Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Missouri in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as co-director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. These roles highlight his commitment to education and research in the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and also as a subspecialty, board certified in Sports Medicine. He is a member of the numerous organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Columbia Regional Hospital from 1998 until 2009.
