Patrick A. Smith, MD
Dr. Smith has dedicated his life to the service of helping others through medicine. From his education in Michigan to his 35 years of practice with COG, he has helped pioneer and educates others within the sports medicine field.
Dr. Smith is a Michigan native who earned his undergraduate degree graduating with honors from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He remained in Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Smith completed a surgical internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center as well as his orthopaedic residency. Upon finishing his residency, he was awarded the "Parke-Davis Research Award" at the University of Michigan. He then moved to Columbus, Georgia where he completed a one-year sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Jack C. Hughston at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.
Dr. Smith joined Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986 and specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has been involved in the care of athletes at the University of Missouri since 1986, including serving as Head Team Physician for 30 years. He also treats high school and college athletes from across the region. He is the recipient of the "Sports Medicine Hall of Fame Award" by the Missouri Athletic Trainer's Association for outstanding service, dedication and contribution in the field of Sports Medicine. He also has been elected to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Dr. Smith has been extensively involved in orthopaedic research with numerous peer-reviewed publications. He performed the first FDA-sanctioned study on the use of platelet-rich plasma to treat knee osteoarthritis. He also has been a pioneer in the use of internal bracing for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair and reconstruction. He is Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and also serves as Co-Director of the Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Missouri in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as co-director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. These roles highlight his commitment to education, as well as research in the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and also carries subspecialty board certification in Sports Medicine. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the prestigious international ACL Study Group.
Dr. Smith and his wife Karen have five children and now three grandchildren spread out around the country. When not working, Dr. Smith enjoys visiting his family.
